How Long Does a Garage Floor Coating Take? (Cure Times Explained)
When you are planning a garage floor, two timelines matter: how long the install takes, and how long until you can walk and park on it. Here is the honest breakdown.
Install: usually about two days
In almost all cases we install over two days: day one is diamond grinding, crack and joint repair, and the base/flake coat; day two is the polyaspartic topcoat and detailing. Polyaspartic cures in roughly an hour per coat, but spreading the work across two days lets every coat go down on a properly prepped, set surface — done right, not rushed. Standard all-epoxy systems take even longer, often three-plus days with overnight cure between coats.
Cure: walk-on that evening, drive-on about a day later
- Foot traffic: usually the evening of day two (a few hours after the final coat).
- Vehicle traffic: typically about 24 hours after the topcoat.
- Full chemical cure: a few more days — avoid harsh chemicals and dragging heavy items right away, but normal use is fine.
Does cold Michigan weather change it?
We coat year-round. Temperature and humidity affect cure speed, and polyaspartic actually tolerates cooler conditions better than epoxy — another reason it is our go-to topcoat. We schedule and adjust the system so your floor cures correctly whatever the season.
