Chip Sizes

Flake chip sizes, explained

The same color can look completely different depending on chip size. Here’s how 1/4", 1/8", and 1/16" compare — in look, feel, and price.

On a flake floor, the “chip” is the colored vinyl fleck broadcast into the coating. We install three chip sizes, and the choice is about look and texture — not durability (all three use the same tough flake-and-polyaspartic system). A bigger chip gives a bold, high-contrast, unmistakably “flake” look; a smaller chip reads finer and more uniform, closer to natural stone. Here’s how each one compares.

1/8" Eighth-Inch chip

A finer, more refined blend — softer texture, still plenty of depth.

A more subtle, refined finish that reads smoother underfoot and blends colors more tightly. A popular upgrade for basements, living spaces, and showrooms. About a 10% increase over the standard quarter-inch.

About +10% vs. standard
1/16" Sixteenth-Inch chip

The finest, most uniform look — almost a solid, speckled stone.

The finest chip we install — nearly a solid, natural-stone appearance with the durability of a full flake system. The premium, designer-grade option. About a 22% increase over the standard quarter-inch.

Chip size questions

What chip size is most popular?

The 1/4" chip is our standard and most-requested size — it delivers the classic, bold flake-floor look and is included at our base price. The 1/8" and 1/16" sizes are refined upgrades.

Does chip size affect the price?

Yes, a little. The 1/4" chip is the baseline. The finer 1/8" chip is about a 10% increase, and the finest 1/16" chip is about a 22% increase, because smaller chips take more material and labor to build the same rich, full coverage.

Does chip size change durability?

No — all three sizes use the same tough flake-and-polyaspartic system and are equally durable. The difference is purely the look and texture: larger chips read bolder, smaller chips look finer and more uniform.

Can I get any color in any chip size?

Yes. Every flake color we offer is available in all three chip sizes, so you can dial in exactly the look you want.
